BackOn 19 May 2011, the Greek Parliament elected Ms Calliope Spanou as the new Greek Ombudsman. Ms Spanou who was Deputy Ombudsman for state - citizen relations since 2003, has been acting Ombudsman since September 2010, following the resignation of the former Greek Ombudsman, Mr Yorgos Kaminis, who was elected Mayor of Athens in November 2010.
Ms Calliope Spanou is Professor of Administrative Sciences and Public Administration. Since 1989, she has taught at the faculty of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Athens. She has also taught at the universities of Amiens, Paris II, and Versailles –Saint Quentin en Yvelines and at the National School of Public Administration. She has been advisor at the National Centre of Public Administration and at the OECD, a member of the Steering Committee of the European Group of Public Administration, and a former President of the Hellenic Political Sciences Association.
Ms Spanou will serve as Ombudsman until 20 February 2012, for the remainder of Mr Kaminis' term of office.
