    Changing face of homelessness highlighted in Ombudsman report

    Homelessness is increasingly affecting families from areas and professions who previously might never have expected to face problems finding somewhere to live, a new report by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman can reveal. The report, “Still No Place Like Home”, shows in 2016-17 one in three complaints received about homelessness services delivered by English authorities came from outside of London.

    Ombudsman working to improve services for asylum seekers

    Ombudsman Peter Tyndall has published a commentary on his Office’s experience of dealing with complaints from refugees and asylum seekers living in direct provision centres.  In ‘The Ombudsman & Direct Provision – The story so far’, the Ombudsman says that sometimes residents are reluctant to complain and some complaints arise as a result of cultural differences.  As a result the Ombudsman’s office has worked with the Reception and Integration Agency, and residents and managers in 35 centres around the country to seek to improve services.

    Ombudsman finds Grandmother’s painful death from cancer was avoidable

    A 73-year-old grandmother’s death from bladder cancer was avoidable, an investigation by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) has found. She died following a hospital’s nine-month delay to diagnose her. An inadequate local investigation failed to recognise this, and her son subsequently brought a complaint about her care to the Ombudsman.

    Ombudsman’s Office to take role in monitoring private aged care facilities / court cells

    The Office of the Ombudsman will soon be monitoring the treatment of patients in privately run aged care facilities and detainees in court cells. The additional responsibilities were gazetted today. They are in addition to the Office’s current responsibilities under the United Nation’s Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT).

The Ombudsman’s report was jointly launched with the Irish Hospice Foundation and the HSE who published an information booklet for the public: “When someone you care about is dying in hospital – What to expect”.

    Control Yuan issued report on co-residence of the physically challenged in sheet-metal houses

    The Control Yuan has issued a report calling for the New Taipei City Government, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health and Welfare to review the handling of the case last year of an illegal sheet-metal dwelling resided in by 18 wheelchair-bound individuals, and issuing advice on making improvements in related policy.

    Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee visited Rosario

    The Ombudsman of the Province of Santa Fe, Raúl Lamberto, received in Rosario Nobel Peace Prize winner, Leyma Gbowee, in the city of Rosario last Friday, 31st of March 2019. Leyma is a Liberian activist who led the peace movement that put an end to the second Liberian civil war in 2003.

    Nova Scotia Appeal Court upholds power of ombudsman's office

    Nova Scotia's highest court has reaffirmed the power of the provincial ombudsman's office to investigate allegations against government departments and agencies. In a decision, the Appeal Court ruled the Ombudsman's office has the authority to receive unredacted records from the Department of Health and Wellness, after the province had objected to releasing the documents in full.

    Ombudsman of Hong Kong presented 2018-19 Annual Report to the public

    The Hong Kong Ombudsman, Ms Winnie Chiu, presented to the public today (25 July) the 2018-19 Annual Report of the Office of The Ombudsman. The Office of The Ombudsman (the Office) received 4,991 complaints in 2018-19, slightly higher than the previous year’s figure. Among the complaints received, 205 were concluded by way of full investigation, of which 58 (28.3%) were substantiated or partially substantiated, similar to previous year’s figure of 26.2%.

    Today, WHO/Europe has published interim guidance on how to deal with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in prisons and other places of detention, entitled “Preparedness, prevention and control of COVID-19 in prisons and other places of detention”. The guidance provides useful information to staff and health care providers working in prisons, and to prison authorities.
