    On 2 October 2024, the governments of the EU Member States appointed the Danish Parliamentary Ombudsman as judge to the Court of Justice of the European Union. He will be sworn in and take office on 7 October 2024. For the same reason, Niels Fenger resigns as Ombudsman, with effect from the same day.

    CCAC Macao published Annual Report 2017

    According to the Organic Law of the Commission Against Corruption of the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Commissioner Against Corruption, Cheong Weng Chon, submitted 2017 Annual Report of the Commission Against Corruption of Macao to the Chief Executive, Chui Sai On, in March 2018. The report was published in the Official Gazette of the Macao Special Administrative Region today (11th April).

    The Human Rights Ombudsman attended the ENO conference on the role of human rights institutions in times of crises in Strasbourg

    Slovenian Human Rights Ombudsman Peter Svetina attended a two-day conference of the European Network of Ombudsmen (ENO) in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Hosted by the offices of the European and French human rights ombudsman's offices, representatives of European national and regional ombudsman institutions and other participants active in this field discussed the role of ombudsmen in times of crises.

    Chief Ombudsman calls for council workshops to be open by default

    The Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier is calling for councils to open workshops by default to reduce the perception that decisions are being made behind closed doors. The call follows Mr Boshier’s decision last year to test concerns that councils were using workshops and other informal meetings to make decisions. He also looked at the way councils were excluding the public from council meetings.

    Ombudsman probes mechanisms used to review and monitor eligibility of existing tenants in subsidised public housing

    The Ombudsman, Ms Connie Lau, today (June 12) initiated a direct investigation under section 7(1)(a)(ii) of The Ombudsman Ordinance (Cap. 397) into the effectiveness of mechanisms used by the Housing Department (HD) and the Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) to review and monitor the eligibility of existing tenants in subsidised public housing.

    Provincial and University Ombuds promote accountability on campus

    Ontario universities came under the provincial ombudsman’s oversight in 2016. The office has since received more than 500 university-related complaints. Paul Dubé is in the “persuasion game.” Whether it’s overseeing complaints about provincial government ministries, municipalities or universities, Mr. Dubé, Ontario’s ombudsman says his modus operandi remains the same. “My approach as an ombudsman has always been to show all stakeholders what’s in it for them, why they will benefit from these recommendations, that it’s in their interest.”

    Ombudsman submits special report on activity during coronavirus pandemic

    On 8 September 2020, the State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel, Matanyahu Englman, presented to the parliament (Knesset) a special report on its activity during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Reference to the report will be made by Dr. Esther Ben-Haim, Head of the Office of the Ombudsman, during a webinar on the theme "Covid-19 and the Ombudsperson - Rising to the Challenge of a Pandemic", which will take place on 24 November 2020.

    Building capacity to tackle the climate emergency

    An NHRIs symposium held on the side-lines of COP26 from 3 - 5 November 2021 aims at providing a greater understanding of the climate regime to facilitate NHRI work to promote and support human rights within climate policy and climate accountability. The event will also be an occasion for NHRIs to discuss and consult on the monitoring and reporting tool on climate change and human rights, which is currently developed by GANHRI.
