CRPD and GANHRI host meeting on persons with disabilities and Covid-19
The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and GANHRI are pleased to invite all NHRIs to a meeting on persons with disabilities and COVID-19 to share experiences, practices, challenges and gaps in protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities during the pandemic. Ombudsman to publish prison inspection reports
On Thursday 6 July, the Chief Ombudsman released his Report on an unannounced inspection of Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison. As a National Preventive Mechanism under OPCAT, the Ombudsman inspects and monitors places of detention to ensure people held there are treated humanely and with dignity. The new practice of publishing these reports has been started in the interests of transparency and accountability.

Regional training on role of Ombudsman institutions in promoting and enforcing accountability ethics
The Office of the Ombudsman (Malawi) is hosting the African regional training on "The role of Ombudsman Institutions in promoting and enforcing accountability ethics" as well as the 14th AOMA Executive Committee meeting from 5 - 9 February 2018 . The training will be held in the framework of the IOI's annual regional subsidy program and attended by IOI President Peter Tyndall.

Ombudsman SA reaches 50
2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the Ombudsman South Australia (SA). The Ombudsman Act 1972 was assented to on 23 November 1972 and the Office opened its doors to the public on 14 December 1972. At that time, South Australia was only the second Australian jurisdiction after Western Australia to install a parliamentary Ombudsman (although South Australia was the first to use the title ‘Ombudsman’). Now all States, Territories and the Commonwealth have an Ombudsman.

Older patients’ families struggle to complain about poor hospital care
Older vulnerable people are often reliant on relatives to raise concerns when things go wrong in hospital. However – as a survey, published by Gransnet and the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman revealed – over half of family members with a concern find it difficult to complain about the hospital care or treatment of an relative.

Complaints about nepotism in Victorian government schools “continue unabated”
Family members and associates of principals in Victorian government schools continue to be hired without principals properly declaring or managing their conflicts of interest, the Victorian Ombudsman has warned. Tabling her investigations into allegations of nepotism in government schools, Ombudsman Glass said she hoped her report would draw attention to the problem and its consequences.

Committee on Human Rights discusses issue of monitoring rights of convicts during a quarantine
At the meeting of the Seimas Committee on Human Rights, the issue of ensuring human rights in the institutions subordinated to the Prison Department during an emergency situation was discussed. During the meeting, Augustinas Normantas, the Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office, drew the attention of the participants to the fact that quarantine conditions are currently being mitigated; therefore, it is necessary to talk about quarantine mitigation measures in correctional facilities.
