    Ombudsman publishes special report on return of third country nationals in 2022

    In its special report, the Office of the Greek Ombudsman stated, that forced returns of third country nationals to their countries of origin are further reduced in 2022, however, the number of detainees in Pre-removal Centres and Police stations is disproportionately high. At the same time, complaints on illegal pushbacks are rising, reinforcing the EU Commission's proposal to member-states to establish independent border monitoring mechanisms.

    Marianne Ryan was officially appointed as Alberta’s ninth Ombudsman and second Public Interest Commissioner on 4 July 2017. Prior to becoming the Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner, Ms Ryan led a successful career that spanned 35 years with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

    Resolving complaints to the Ombudsman early

    In late 2016, the Victorian Ombudsman created an Early Resolution Team which identifies matters that can be resolved informally, focusing on practical outcomes. The team now handles about 85 per cent of approaches to the Ombudsman, closing most within 30 days.

    Ontario Ombudsman publishes Annual Report 2021-2022

    Ontario Ombudsman Paul Dubé on August 10, 2022 reported that public concerns and complaints to the provincial watchdog have returned almost to pre-pandemic levels. His office fielded 25,161 complaints and inquiries in fiscal 2021-2022, an increase of 25% over the previous year. Most (52%) were resolved in two weeks or less.

    Public service complaints to the Ombudsman rise by 11%

    Complaints to the Ombudsman about public services rose by 11% to over 3,500 in 2014. Launching his annual report today (Wednesday 10 June) Ombudsman Peter Tyndall said the increase was mainly due to the additional 200 public bodies which came within his jurisdiction for a full year for the first time in 2014. These included bodies in the education sector such as the State Examinations Commission and Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI).
