    Canadian Council of Parliamentary Ombudsman welcomes Prince Edward Island's first Ombudsperson

    Prince Edward Island’s (PEI) becomes the latest province to appoint an independent officer responsible for ensuring fairness and providing a safe avenue for whistleblower complaints in the public service. Sandy Hermiston will take office as the province’s first Ombudsperson and Public Interest Disclosure Commissioner on 14 February 2022. The Canadian Council of Parliamentary Ombudsman (CCPO) warmly welcomes the news.

    Our value for money: an independent review

    Earlier this year the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO) commissioned an independent panel to carry out a peer review assessment of its value for money, led by Peter Tyndall, Ombudsman for the Republic of Ireland and President of the International Ombudsman Institute. The panel has now published their report, which concluded that following the PHSO’s organisational reforms and the service it offers beyond investigating complaints, the Office offers good value for money for taxpayers.

    NPM recommends more unified regulation and implementation of rules in residential care institutions

    In June, the national preventive mechanism (NPM) of Slovenia conducted unannounced content-specific visits of four institutions and several residential groups providing education programmes for children and adolescents with emotional and behavioural disorders. On several occasions during its previous visits, the NPM had found that the institutions had different rules of behaviour and conduct and procedures for taking educational measures in the event of their violation. Therefore it decided to examine the situation.

    In accordance with the Fundamental Law of Hungary (accepted in April, 2011) the new Act on the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights will create a unified ombudsman system.     Accessibility to the beach for Persons with Disabilities

    Following an Own-Initiative Report of the Commissioner for Administration and the Protection of Human Rights regarding the accessibility of Persons with Disabilities to the Beaches, all the recommendations of the Report were implemented. In particular, the relevant legislation was amended, access ramps/passageways were built at beaches that did not have and/or the existing ones have been improved, while Seatrac and floating wheelchairs have been placed on other beaches that were not accessible from Persons with Disabilities.
