    Ombudsman report on mass arrests during the Copenhagen UN climate summit

    In December 2009 Copenhagen was host city for the UN climate summit, attended by the world’s political leaders and a very large number of NGOs. A large number of demonstrations was registered with the police. Some organisations had indicated through the press that they might not use only legal methods in connection with the demonstrations – a promise which some of them later fulfilled.

    New Members of the Austrian Ombudsman Board

    On 1 July 2013 the new members of the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) took office. Günther Kräuter, Gertrude Brinek and Peter Fichtenbauer were elected by the Austrian National Council for the term of office from July 2013 to June 2019. For Gertrude Brinek it is already the second term of office. In its inaugural meeting the new AOB appointed Günther Kräuter as Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI).

    National Ombudsman notes Points for Improvement in Repatriation Process

    A study by the National Ombudsman regarding repatriation processes concludes that some aspects of this procedure can be improved. The Ombudsman has made recommendations to the State Secretary of Security and Justice with regard to the availability of medical care, the accessibility of the complaints procedure, and the exchange of information. In his report, he also advocates multidisciplinary supervision of the entire repatriation process as well as standard investigation of incidents.

    Manitoba Ombudsman lays “snooping” charge under The Personal Health Information Act

    Manitoba Ombudsman conducted an investigation following a report from Manitoba Health, Healthy Living and Seniors related to a privacy breach at its Provincial Drug Program. A former employee who had access to personal health information through their job, allegedly used that access to view information for purposes unrelated to their work. Upon completing the investigation, the ombudsman laid a charge against the individual under PHIA for deliberately accessing another person’s health information inappropriately.
