    Iowa's Ombuds Office received over 4700 contacts for assistance in 2010, according to a report released 1 June 2011. Over 80 percent were complaints or information requests about state and local government agencies.

    Training

    The huge success of the training sessions showed that there is a strong demand among member institutions for training activities. The IOI has become highly aware of the necessity of training programmes for its members and is planning to offer additional training courses focusing on areas that are of specific concern to ombudsman institutions and taking into account regional topics of specific interest.

    New Alberta Ombudsman sworn in

    On October 18, 2011, Peter Hourihan was sworn in as Alberta’s eighth Ombudsman. Over the course of his 35 year career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Mr. Hourihan worked in a variety of policing roles, most recently serving as the Commanding Officer for the RCMP in British Columbia, responsible for federal, provincial and municipal police operations.

    Penal authorities endangering the right to defence of persons in pre-trial detention

    A decree of the Ministry for Justice stipulated that persons in pre-trial detention may have uncontrolled contact in writing and on the phone with their lawyers. Although phone calls to lawyers belong in principle to that category which may not be controlled, in practice, however, there was a possibility for the staff of the penal institutions to listen in shortly.

    Reminder for regional subsidies 2013

    In its efforts to further increase the regional impact of the IOI, the members of the IOI Board of Directors decided at their Wellington meeting in November 2012 to once again make regional subsidies available to IOI members. Institutions interested in applying for a regional subsidy have to submit their project proposal to the IOI General Secretariat by 25 February 2013.

    AORC summit to be held in Cape Town

    The African Ombudsman Research Centre (AORC) will hold a summit on the framework and standards for the establishment of credible Ombudsman and Mediator offices in Africa. The AORC summit will precede the meeting of the Executive Committee of AOMA and take place from 10 to 11 December 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa.
