Azerbaijan | 176 convicts pardoned in Azerbaijan

In the framework of combating new COVID19 pandemic the activities on combating the virus continues in Azerbaijan. By the country President’s decree on pardoning dated 6 April 2020, 176 convicts were released from prison and sent into quarantine.

The decision on pardoning was given by taking into consideration the appeals of the convicts over the age of 65 who need special care because of their age and state of health due to the spread of coronavirus infection.

Ten convicts were released by the motion of the Ombudsman submitted in accordance with the Article 1.7 of the Constitutional Law on the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

During the events of pardoning Ombudsman Sabina Aliyeva advised each of the pardoned persons to follow the rules of the quarantine regime declared due to the outbreak of ongoing COVID-19 infection and protect their and other’s lives.

Ombudsman Aliyeva also mentioned that during the years of independence of the country 66 orders on pardoning and 11 acts of amnesty were issued in Azerbaijan, as a result of which thousands of persons were released and joined their families.
