From 18 to 20 November 2024, the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) received a delegation from the Uzbek Ombudsman Institution (Authorized Person of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights) for a study visit in Vienna.
In addition to the presentations of the different mandates of the two institutions, the focus was on cooperation and exchange in the field of preventive activities for the protection against violence and torture, but also on the field of activities as national human rights institutions.
Ombudsperson and IOI Secretary General, Ms Gaby Schwarz, and Uzbek Ombudsperson, Ms Feruza Eshmatova, also discussed ways to deepen cooperation within the International Ombudsman Institute.
During the three-day visit, the Austrian Ombudsman Board staff provided insights into the work of the Austrian National Preventive Mechanism in social institutions, in the context of police activities, and in police detention centres and correctional facilities. The programme also included fruitful discussions with representatives of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Austrian Human Rights Advisory Board, as well as a visit to the Korneuburg correctional institution.
