SERBIA | Belgrade Platform for Promotion and Protection of the Environment

The Belgrade Platform for Promotion and Protection of the Environment was established following the International Conference on the Role of Ombudspersons in Environmental Protection held on 13 and 14 June 2024 in Belgrade, organized by the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia, supported by the OSCE Mission to Serbia.

The Platform points to the need for a more coordinated, more efficient, and sustainable response to contemporary challenges in the field of environmental protection by independent institutions, legislative, executive and judicial authorities, the academic community, the civil and business sectors, and the media in Türkiye, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Italy and Serbia.

In addition to the call for joint action, the Belgrade Platform also aims to raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection, as well as to encourage competent authorities to take concrete steps towards the preservation of natural resources and the realization of citizens' rights to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Every year we face major challenges that affect the environment in an increasingly obvious way and we witness more and more climate change and water and air pollution. Bearing in mind that the topic of the international conference organized by the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia on June 13-14, 2024 in Belgrade was aimed at joint efforts to ensure a healthy environment, it is very important to emphasize precisely this aspect of the struggle, i.e. adaptation to changing environmental conditions.

Namely, only through the joint and mutual activities of various actors from different areas of social life, all of us as individuals, office holders, and society as a whole, should demonstrate that we stand stand ready to cooperate on one of the most important topics of today - the protection of our planet and the preservation of the environment for future generations.

Therefore, it is important that we all as collectivity take responsibility for the endangered environment and exhibit equal determination in restoring the disturbed balance.
