The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete has recently appointed Hon. Bahame Tom Mukirya Nyanduga as the new Chairman of the Tanzania Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG).
The President also appointed Hon. Iddi Ramadhani Mapuri as the Vice-Chairman and four other officials as Commissioners. They are Hon. Mohamed Khamis Hamad, Hon. Dr. Kevin Mandopi, Hon. Rehema Msabila Ntimizi and Hon. Salma Ali Hassan. Their appointments started effectively since January 6, 2015, according to a statement issued yesterday by the Directorate of Presidential Communication.
The new leaders have been sworn in today (January 8, 2015) by President Kikwete at a brief ceremony held at the State House and attended by several top government officials, CHRAGG leaders and family members of the appointees.
Hon. Nyanduga is a lawyer by profession. He holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of Dar es Salaam, Masters in Law from London and Postgraduate Diploma in Law from The Hague.
Until his appointment, he served in various capacities at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Tanganyika Law Society, and African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, where he worked as Commissioner and Acting Chairperson of the Commission.
On his part Hon. Mapuri is an administrator, holding a Bachelor Degree in Sociology and Public Administration from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Diploma in Rural Management and Postgraduate Diploma in Management from India. He once worked as a Commissioner of Labour and Director of Governance and Human Resources Development in the Ministry of Youth, Women and Empowerment of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar.
All the four Commissioners have legal backgrounds and have served as civil servants in different public institutions in both Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.
Hon. Nyanduga and his team becomes a third batch to head the Commission since its establishment in 2001. He takes over from the second and the first batches headed by former Chairmen, Hon. Principal Judge (rtd.) Amiri Ramadhani Manento (2008 – 2014) and Hon. Justice (rtd.) Robert Habesh Kisanga (2002 – 2008) respectively.
