ITALY | Civil Defense, Human Rights, and History Converge in a Meeting Among Italy, Poland, and Serbia

Montecassino, a place steeped in historical significance, is gearing up to host an unprecedented event that brings together three nations in the promotion of civil defense and citizens' rights. On 4 November 2023, Marino Fardelli, the Ombudsman for the Lazio Region and President of the Italian Ombudsmen, will welcome his Polish counterparts, Mr. Marcin Wiacek, Commissioner for Human Rights in Poland, and Mr. Valeri Vachev, Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights in Poland, along with Mr. Zoran Pasalic, Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia, for an extraordinary meeting dedicated to civil defense and shared values.

This marks the first time that Montecassino and Cassino are hosting such a significant event, and the connection between the venue and the theme of the meeting could not be more fitting. Montecassino, with its history of resilience and reconciliation, stands as the ideal location for an international dialogue on civil defense, human rights, and active citizen participation.

The event, titled "Active Citizenship, Civil Defense, and Human Rights: an Italy-Poland-Serbia Dialogue at Montecassino," presents a unique opportunity to discuss the importance of civic participation and the promotion of rights, which are distinctive traits of these three nations. Guests will share their experiences, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities that civil defense presents in light of global challenges that intersect with the roles and functions of Ombudsmen.

Prior to the meeting, there will be a significant conversation with the Abbot of Montecassino, Dom Luca Fallica, underscoring the deep connection between the venue and the event itself. This is a testament to Montecassino's importance in international dialogue and cooperation.

Following the meeting, there will be a visit to historical sites, including a tribute at the Polish Cemetery, a tour of the Memorial Museum of the 2nd Polish Corps, and the Obelisk. This extraordinary visit will be led by local historians who will illuminate the significant history of Montecassino and its special connection with the Polish people.

Marino Fardelli, President of the Italian Ombudsmen and Ombudsman for the Lazio Region, stated, "I am grateful to the Abbot of Montecassino for offering us the opportunity to host this institutional event within the millennia-old Abbey of Montecassino. When I proposed the idea of a meeting in Italy to my Polish colleagues, they immediately mentioned Montecassino. History and rights will be the central themes addressed during the trilateral meeting."
