HUNGARY | Deputy Ombudsman for ethnic minorities

Commissioner for Fundamental Rights Dr. László Székely has nominated Dr. Erzsébet Szalayné Sándor, habilitated associate professor, former dean of the University of Pécs and director at the National University of Public Service, as his deputy in charge of the protection of the nationalities living in Hungary.

Pursuant to the provisions of the Act on the Commissioner for Fundamental Rights, prior to making his proposal the Ombudsman requested an opinion from the national minority self-governments – the self‑governments concerned unanimously supported the Ombudsman's nominee.

Dr. Erzsébet Szalayné Sándor as a scientific researcher, university teacher (both domestic and foreign) and member of various domestic and international professional organizations specializes in the protection of minorities.

After parliamentary hearings, the nominee shall be elected with a two‑thirds majority in the Parliament.
