Meeting on 19-20.5.2001, the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights chose Deputy-Ombudsman Maija Sakslin for a seat on the Agency's Executive Board.
The Executive Board comprises the chair and deputy-chair of the Management Board, two other members chosen by the Management Board and one representative of the Commission.
Its task is to assist the Management Board. A representative of the Council of Europe can attend meetings.
Agency helps Member States implement fundamental rights
The Agency for Fundamental Rights is an independent European Union body that supports Union institutions and Member States in questions relating to fundamental rights.
It helps the Member States ensure that fundamental rights are implemented in full in legislation and in its enforcement.
The Agency provides expertise relating to fundamental rights by, e.g., collecting data on these rights and commissioning scientific research and surveys.
The Agency can also draft and publish conclusions and opinions. It promotes a dialogue with civil society organisations to raise awareness of fundamental rights.
The Agency's Management Board comprises one independent member appointed by each of the Member States, one independent member appointed by the Council of Europe and two representatives of the Commission. Members serve for five-year terms.
The Agency was established in 2007 and is headquartered in Vienna.
