The Control Yuan National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) held the awards ceremony for the “Color Our Rights: 2024 Human Rights Poster Design Competition” on 8 December 2024.
Chairperson Chu Chen noted that this year’s competition theme was “Equality and Non-discrimination” and, for the first time, submissions were solicited internationally through Taiwan’s overseas missions. A total of 1,365 entries were received from Finland, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, showcasing cross-border interpretations and appeals for human rights. Chairperson Chen added that through creativity and new generational perspectives, complex and sometimes unwelcome human rights issues can be communicated visually, hoping that social inequality and human rights violations can become more visible and better understood. All winning works will be compiled on the NHRC’s official website and licensed for non-profit use to promote human rights education and increase the global visibility of human rights imagery.
This year’s gold award in the general category went to Jia-Yi Jhan for “Education is Not a Privilege, It’s a Right,” expressing that education should be equal and non-discriminatory regardless of children’s race or background, calling for society’s attention to children’s right to education. In the student category, gold award winner Hai-Fang Hu’s work “Marriage” explored gender inequality within families. Additionally, People’s Choice Awards were presented to Rou-Rou Hsiung in the general category for “Discriminator Equals Perpetrator,” conveying how even one’s small glances can become another’s nightmare, and to Zi-Jing Lu in the student category for “I am not a Commodity,” calling for more space for freedom in children’s growth and development.
