Belgium | First Federal Ombudsman of Belgium passed away

It is with deep sadness that the IOI has learned that Mr Herman Wuyts, first Federal Ombudsman of Belgium, passed away on 27 September 2019.

Herman Wuyts taught political science at the Erasmushogeschool in Brussels and was a professor at the Hogeschool Gent.

On 3 January 1997, he became the first-ever Federal Ombudsman of Belgium. Together with Pierre-Yves Monette, he developed and establish this new institution, which became responsible for building bridges between public administrations and the citizens. He remained in office for 8 years.

Mr Wuyts was the Dutch-speaking member of the first Board of Federal Ombudsman of Belgium from January 1997 to November 2005.

During his time as Federal Ombudsman he also played an important role within the IOI and helped shape the organization in is function as Regional Vice-President of the IOI’s European Region from 2000 - 2004.
