The Cayman Islands Ombudsman is a senior public official, charged with monitoring the public administration through the examination and investigation of complaints from members of the public who believe they have been adversely affected by the administrative actions of a public body. The remit of the Ombudsman covers all Government Ministries, Portfolios, Departments and Sections, Statutory Authorities and Government Companies.
The person appointed should be recognized, either publicly or within their own professional area, as an individual of proven integrity and independence. S/he will have the gravitas and charisma to champion the rights of the citizen and/or groups of society in their dealings with the machinery of Government administration. S/he will lead a high-profile office through a period of expansion and change. S/he will have a proven track record of management and leadership of a team of professionals including but not limited to meeting client deliverables, setting targets, annual appraisals, and managing the professional development of all staff on his or her team. S/he will possess a broad understanding and knowledge of public administration including the political and legal systems, and the governance of public bodies.
The post holder must possess a university degree or a similar tertiary qualification or equivalent preferably in Law or Public Administration. In addition, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration or Law or a senior practitioner in law or a similar field would be highly desirable.
