Werner Amon, former Ombudsman of Austria and IOI Secretary General from 2019 – 2022, has been awarded IOI Honorary Life Membership for his commitment and successful work for the organization.
Werner Amon resigned from his posts as Ombudsman of the Republic of Austria and Secretary General of the IOI to take on the position as Minister for European and International Affairs, Education, and Human Resources of the State of Styria (Austria).
Despite the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and his shortened term as IOI Secretary General, Mr. Amon’s contribution to the IOI has been nothing short of profound. His legacy will be of not just transformational growth to the IOI Secretariat, but also greatly enhancing the IOI’s place in the international community.
Mr. Amon helped strengthen the IOI’s standing at the international level. He played a leading role in the IOI receiving the status of an “International Institution” under the Austrian Act on Headquarter Locations. Mr. Amon lead significant engagement with the United Nations (UN), including substantially progressing the IOI’s application for Observer Status to the General Assembly of the UN. Under his leadership, the IOI’s cooperation and relations with international partner organizations and Ombudsman networks was further consolidated, including vital engagement with our Regions, and the IOI was able to continuously grow its worldwide membership.
Mr. Amon also achieved a substantive increase in the number of staff members at the IOI General Secretariat in Vienna and introduced a new, modern corporate identity for the IOI.
Honorary Life Membership is granted by the IOI Board of Directors to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution in respect of the purposes of the IOI or who have rendered outstanding services to the organization.
