ITALY | International Ombudsman Conference took place in Rome

The International Ombudsman Conference entitled 'The Role of the Ombudsman in the World: Between Reality and Possibilities' was held in Rome on 21 and 22 September 2023. The Conference brought together Ombudsman, government representatives, experts and academics from all over the world. It was a unique opportunity with large participation of approximately 250 attendees to share experiences, best practices and delve into the crucial role of ombudsmen in ensuring open and accountable governance.

The event, which took place at the Chamber of Deputies, Sala dei Gruppi parlamentari (Via Campo Marzio, 78), represented "a crucial moment of discussion and reflection on the issues of ombudsmanship and human rights", as stated by Marino Fardelli, President of the National Coordination of Italian Ombudsmen and Ombudsman of the Lazio Region. This event was organised in cooperation with the Lazio Regional Council, the Conference of Legislative Assemblies of Italian Regions and Autonomous Provinces, the IOI, and the Council of Europe - Venice Commission.

Indeed, it was an intense two-day event that aimed to create a unique forum for ombudsmen to share their experiences in the various contexts they operate.

Proceedinigs commenced on 21 September with the presence of the Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies On.le Giorgio Mulè, the President of the Lazio Regional Council On.le Antonello Aurigemma, and IOI President Mr. Chris Field. The latter, in particular, thanked Marino Fardelli for his efforts in organising the initiative, confirming the IOI's support, which is increasingly valuable in times marked by pandemics and wars, such as the current ones.

The second day of work focused on further exploring topics related to justice, equity and citizens' rights. Participants demonstrated a strengthened commitment to promoting a more just and inclusive society.

Environmental justice, technology in relation to human rights, diversity and inclusion, and international experiences were the four thematic areas in which this second and final day was articulated.

The importance of ongoing commitment to address emerging challenges and consolidate the progress made is the legacy of this conference, which proved to be a unique opportunity to promote international cooperation and create a world where everyone can enjoy fundamental rights.

The conference was concluded by Hon. Giorgio Silli, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy.
