THAILAND | IOI Asian Regional Meeting held in Bangkok

As Asian Regional President of the IOI, the Chief Ombudsman of Thailand, Mr. Somsak Suwansujarit, hosted the Regional Meeting 2023 on July 10 2023, in Bangkok, Thailand. In conjunction to the Regional Meeting a seminar was held under the theme "Asian Ombudsman as a Mechanism for Promoting Fair Administration, Good Governance and the Rule of Law", which was followed by a press conference.

The annual meeting took place at the Centara Grand at Central Plaza Ladprao in Bangkok, uniting Ombudsman institutions across the Asian region with a shared goal to fortify their role and significance. 

On 11 July 2023, the International Seminar on “Asian Ombudsman as a Mechanism for Promoting Fair Administration, Good Governance and the Rule of Law” took place, serving as a unified platform for an exchange of best practices, experiences, and technical expertise through engaging panel discussions. It also delved into the essential keywords and key elements outlined in the Venice Principles and the UN Resolution on the role of Ombudsman (A/RES/77/224) to illustrate how Ombudsman institutions in the Asian region can effectively support the two aforementioned documents.

On the last day, 12 July 2023, the IOI Asian Regional President and Chief Ombudsman of Thailand, Mr. Somsak Suwansujarit along with 10 IOI Asian member institutions issued a joint press statement, demonstrating their collective dedication to bolster the performance capacity of member institutions with the aim of benefiting the rights of citizens in each country.

At the Press Conference, the key figures: the IOI President Chris Field PSM, the Asian Regional President, Mr. Somsak Suwansujarit, and the IOI Asian Regional Director and the Ombudsman of the Sindh Province, Mr. Ajaz Ali Khan expressed their great pleasure with the strengthened ties among the member institutions in the region. Besides, they also emphasized the significance of this regional gathering in fostering closer relations between the IOI and its Asian member institutions.
