The International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) expresses its grave concern about the acts of violence that have been taking place in Haiti and supports the important call made by Dr. Renan Hédouville, Protector of the Citizen of the Republic of Haiti, to the government authorities of the country to guarantee the right to life and security of the population.
In view of the recent developments in Haiti, the IOI expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the victims of acts of violence, in particular the acts of looting, vandalism, arson and murder, which the IOI strongly condemns. These and other acts attributed to criminal gangs are fueling the climate of violence in different parts of the country and also led to a massive internal displacement and international migration.
In a statement of support, the IOI expresses its solidarity for the work carried out by the Office for the Protection of the Citizen of the Republic of Haiti as well as for the work in defense of human rights of ombudspersons, who work in countries affected by the humanitarian crisis in Haiti.
The IOI reiterates its respect and support for the work of the Office for the Protection of the Citizen of the Republic of Haiti, whose work is essential to achieve the respect and guarantee of the human rights of the entire population of Haiti.
