ISRAEL | Joseph Shapiro is the new State Comptroller and Ombudsman

The Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, recently elected Judge (ret) Joseph Shapiro as the new State Comptroller and Ombudsman of Israel. After Joseph Shapiro was sworn in as the State Comptroller in the Knesset plenum, a toast ceremony was held in honor of new comptroller at the office.

During the ceremony President Shimon Peres emphasized the importance of the institution: ”Bureaucracy cannot exist without review. The independence of review is of enormous importance. In Hebrew, the word morning and the word review come from the same exact root, meaning “light has come”.”

The former State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss congratulated the incoming Comptroller, and thanked the Speaker of the Knesset for the joint and very fruitful labor over the years.  The short ceremony was also attended by Ministers, former State Comptrollers, judges, the State Control Committee Chairman and senior executives from State Comptroller`s Office and the Knesset’s administration.

Judge Shapira was born in Jerusalem in 1945. He played an active role in the Israeli legal system since 1968. He was founder and partner in the Jerusalem law firm Kramer-Shapira-Schneider for many years, during which time he also served as President of the West Bank Court-Martial and was elected Chairman of the Jerusalem district branch of the Israel Bar Association. Judge Shapira has been active in academic, military and public activities, as well as undertaking many voluntary positions. He has published a number of articles and taught law students and judges for several years. Judge Shapira has been married for 39 years and has three children and two grandchildren.
