Ombudsman Grace Malera has been recognized as one of the 100 inspiring women in the country for the year 2023, courtesy of Wealth Malawi, whose focus is honoring and celebrating phenomenal women and female leaders.
Wealth Malawi is an affiliate of Wealth Africa; a media company focusing on wealth creation in the areas of leadership, entrepreneurship, business and investment.
Honorable Malera has been recognized for championing justice for people who lodge complaints against public service providers in Malawi; work which has been described as impactful.
Commenting on the development Malera has said she is humbled by the recognition hoping that it inspires her colleagues to continue supporting her in the work that she does as the Ombudsman of the Republic of Malawi.
“It is a great honor to be amongst this list of 100 women knowing that there are actually many women in Malawi doing far much significant and extra ordinary work out there. I am extremely humbled by the recognition and hope that it inspires my colleagues to continue supporting me in all the work that we do,” she said.
The honorable Ombudsman added that the recognition just like any recognition serves to inspire and motivate her to diligently stay the course in pushing for access to justice for people, especially the voiceless, the vulnerable and the invisible in the society.
A lawyer by profession with about 19 years at the bar, Malera who is also a Human Rights expert encouraged fellow women in Malawi to keep working hard and pushing to make a differences in whatever spaces they find themselves in.
“We all have something to offer, be it at family, community or national level. [As the Environmental Activist Greta Thunberg said; ‘You are never too small to make a difference.’] Together we can make a difference,” Malera reiterated.
Also featuring on the list are First Lady Madame Monica Chakwera, spouse to the vice President Mary Chilima, the Speaker of National Assembly Catherine Gotani Hara, Director General of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Martha Chizuma and Executive Secretary for the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Habiba Osman among others.
The nomination comes ahead of a Wealth Woman Summit later this month [May, 2023] which will be held under the theme; Inspire equity.
The Wealth Women's Summit is a gender inclusive event that will address topical issues around equality and representation in the workplace, business place and beyond.
