BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA | Meet the newly appointed Ombudspersons of Bosnia and Herzegovina

The newly appointed Ombudspersons of Bosnia and Herzegovina are Dr Jasminka Džumhur, Nives Jukić and Dr Nevenko Vranješ.

Dr. Nevenko Vranješ is a law graduate and holds a doctor of legal sciences and a doctor of political sciences. He obtained his first diploma of basic studies at the Military Academy in Belgrade. Mr. Vranješ assumed the duties of the Ombudsman for Human Rights of Bosnia and Herzegovina from among the Serbian people on 5 September 2022.

Dr. Jasminka Džumhur holds a PhD in law and looks back at more than 30 years of experience in the field of judiciary, human rights and international relations. Since January 2016, she is a member of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families. Over the period 2010 - 2015 she was actively involved in the work of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances. Prior to her first appointment as Ombudsperson of Bosnia and Herzegovina back in 2008, she worked as a judge. Ms. Džumhur is a trainer of police officers, judges, prosecutors, social workers, representatives of NGOs, and representatives of the international forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina on topics involving human rights.

Ms. Nives Jukić is a law graduate with many years of work experience in the field of human rights. Ms. Jukić has been working at the Ombudsman’s office since 1997. She performed the duties of the Assistant Ombudsman and carried out investigations into citizens' complaints, monitored proceedings before the courts, participated in the preparation of special reports and other tasks that were important for the work of the Ombudsman. Until she was appointed as Ombudsman from among the Croatian people, she performed the duties of Head of the Department for Monitoring the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Institution of Human Rights Ombudsman of Bosnia and Herzegovina handles complaints related to poor functioning or to human rights violations committed by any organ of Bosnia and Herzegovina, its entities and District Brcko. The cases are opened upon individual complaints filed by natural persons or legal entities, or ex officio.
