On 12 May 2022 IOI President Chris Field took the opportunity of a meeting of the IOI Board of Directors in New York to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the IOI and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). UNITAR was represented in this virtual signing ceremony by United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and UNITAR Executive Director Mr. Nikhil Seth, who joined the virtual ceremony from Geneva.
UNITAR and the IOI share the common goals and objectives with regard to developing and strengthening institutional and organizational capacities by raising awareness and providing training and learning solutions.
Within the framework of this MoU, both organizations seek to develop and implement training and capacity building activities to empower Ombudsman institutions and to familiarize them with the UN. At the same time, the MoU will enable the IOI to implement information campaigns for UN bodies and representatives to gain a better understanding of the Ombudsman concept and the broad mandate of Ombudsman institutions in all regions of the world.
UNITAR supports governmental, non-governmental and international organizations in enhancing their capacities by offering customizable learning solutions that fit their respective needs. “Signing this Memorandum of Understanding with UNITAR is an important step for the IOI and its members and will further strengthen the IOI’s relations with the United Nations,” underlined IOI Secretary General Werner Amon after the signing ceremony in New York.
