She helds this position until a new Ombudsman is elected and replaces Mr. Enrique Múgica Herzog, who had held the position since June 2000.

María Luisa Cava de Llano y Carrió was Deputy Mayor of Ibiza as well as First Vice-President and Head of Finance and Home Affairs on the Ibiza and Formentera Island Council. Furthermore she was the First Vice-President of the Parliament and an MP in the Congress of deputies before she worked as first Deputy Ombudsman on defence and home affairs, justice and domestice violence, economic administration and foreign affais, and immigration.
