Armenia | New Human Rights Defender

Karen Andreasyan was elected Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia on 2 March 2011. He was nominated last week by the Armenian parliament's majority.

A Doctor of Law and a member of the Chamber of Advocates of Armenia since 2006, Karen Andreasyan was born in 1977.

He received his academic training at the Faculty of Law of Yerevan State University (Armenia), the University of California Berkeley (USA) and Oxford University (UK). From 2001 to 2007 he was a professor in the Faculty of Law of Yerevan State University.

From 2001 to 2007, Mr Andresyan lectured at the Law Department of Yerevan State University. Simultaneously (from 2001 to 2003) he worked for a number of non-governmental organizations. He was an international expert and consultant in the international organization “Article 19” based in the UK as well as the “Open Society Justice Initiative” in Hungary and the “Access to Information” Program in Bulgaria.

From 2006 to 2007 worked as Adviser to the President of RA Constitutional Court. While being head of a law firm he carried out a series of media projects from 2008 onwards. In a cooperation the European Media Center organized higher educational competition of information law and investigative press for students specialized in journalism and law, presented the TV series «Theme of the Country» broadcasted via Yerkir Media TV Company, the TV series «In Reality» broadcasted via Armenia TV Company.

Karen Andreasyan is the author of about twenty scientific articles, educational textbooks and other works.
