Cyprus | New Ombudswoman takes office

On 3 March 2011, the House of Representatives (Parliament) of Cyprus approved the Ministerial Council's proposal that Ms Eliza Savvidou be the next Commissioner for Administration (Ombudsman) of Cyprus.

Ms Savvidou took office on 16 March 2011 and replaces the previous Commissioner for Administration, Ms Eliana Nicolaou, whose term as Ombudsman expired last December.

Eliza Savvidou was born in 1952 and studied law in Athens. She worked as a journalist and later as a lawyer before joining the Ombudsman's Office in 1991 (when the Office was set up). Her extensive experience includes the handling of police abuse complaints, as well as immigration, equal treatment, and human rights cases. She has represented the Ombudsman's Office in the European Network of Independent Equality Authorities since 2004.
