On 6 May 2014, Victor Ciorbea was sworn in as People’s Advocate (Ombudsman) of Romania. He was elected on 16 April 2014 by the two Houses of Parliament and takes office for a term of five years. Mr. Ciorbea replaces Anastasiu Crişu who resigned from office in December 2013.
Mr. Ciorbea was born in 1954 and has longstanding political experience. From 1996 until 1997 he was the Mayor of Bucharest. From 12 December 1996 to 30 March 1998 Mr. Ciorbea served as Prime Minister of Romania.
Mr. Ciorbea is a trained lawyer and worked for the municipal tribunal in Bucharest, as well as a lecturer in Law at the University of Bucharest. He was awarded a doctorate in Law by the University of Bucharest.
