The Office of the Ombudsman in Malawi has released the 2023 Annual Report which presents the activities that the Office carried out in the year.
Pursuant to Section 127 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi and Section 9 (2) of the Ombudsman Act (Chapter 3:07 of the Laws of Malawi), the Ombudsman has submitted the report to the National Assembly through the Office of the speaker.
The report is providing an account of how the Office faired in implementing its constitutional mandate and specific commitments in the year under review while capturing major planned activities for the year 2024. The Report also includes summaries of the Inquiries and selected complaints investigated during the year under review.
Overall in 2023 the OoO handled 3467 complaints out of which 2707 were carry overs from the previous years. A total of 760 complaints were received in the year under review. Out of the complaints received, 208 were admitted for investigations while the rest were handled using other forms of complaints handling. According to the report 453 files were closed for various reasons, as per the Complaints Handling.
“There was an increase in percentage for labor related matters as a result of increased number of complaints relating to irregular or unprocedural recruitment processes which keep recurring in the public service. The Office also saw an increase in the number of women lodging complaints from 14 % in 2022 to 21 % in the year 2023,” the report reads in part
Led by Honorable Ombudsman Grace Malera, in the year under review the Malawi Ombudsman worked on two systemic investigations that were carried over to 2024 on the National Economic Empowerment Fund Limited Loan Processes and Management and Investigations on the Affordable Inputs Programme Implementation for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 Growing Seasons.
