The recently released winter edition of the Ombudsman Quarterly Review puts a special emphasis on the Ombudsmen's activities in the area of monitoring and inspecting places of detention under the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT), monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and providing assistance to Pacific Ombudsmen.
The new edition of the Ombudsman Quarterly Review furthermore takes account of the second report by the Independent Monitoring Mechanism - an entity created to monitor the implementation of the Disabilities Convention in New Zealand. The report under the title "Making Disability Rights Real" covers the period from July 2012 to December 2013.
In addition to an introduction to the current situation in New Zealand, the report includes 38 recommendations on steps that shall lead to a better protection of the rights of people with disabilities. Data, accessibility, building a people driven system, violence and abuse as well as education could – in this regard – be identified as the most pressing issues.
