Slovenia | Ombudsman backed declaration on ethnic communities from the former Yugoslavia

The Human Rights Ombudsman of the Republic of Slovenia backed a declaration on ethnic communities from the former Yugoslavia living in Slovenia which the National Assembly endorsed on 1 February.

The document brings no new legal status for the communities or new obligations for the government, but merely expresses the parliament's general position on these communities.

The document specifically names the Albanian, Bosnian, Montenegrin, Croatian, Macedonian and Serbian communities in Slovenia, whose members it says have a right to organise themselves based on their ethnicity and can enjoy and foster their culture, language and contribute to Slovenia's multi-culturality.

The document, which was backed by 63 votes against three, says that Slovenia will not only recognise, but will also encourage such activities and will aspire to create the legal basis to secure material and other support for the communities' activities.
