NEW ZEALAND | Ombudsman hosts international webinar on “OPCAT prison inspection practice”

The Chief Ombudsman of New Zealand is the designated National Preventative Mechanisms (NPM) under the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture (OPCAT) for a number of different types of places of detention in New Zealand, including prisons.

Emma and Peter will present on the basics of how the New Zealand Office of the Ombudsman undertakes OPCAT prison inspections. Emma will use a recent example to talk through the practical steps inspectors undertake in their prison inspections, and the reporting and follow up that occurs after. Peter will talk about his role as Chief Ombudsman in the process. The Webinar will provide an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. Questions in advance are encouraged.

Who should attend:

This Webinar is free to attend for international NPMs, Ombudsmen, human rights, and integrity institutions that are new to monitoring places of detention under OPCAT and/or have an interest in monitoring places of detention under OPCAT. The webinar will be targeted at a basic level.

This webinar be run via Zoom on Wednesday 10 February 2021 between 3.00-4.00pm NZST
