MALAWI | Ombudsman in annual file audit

The Office of the Ombudsman in Malawi is conducting its annual file updating and audit exercise. According to Administration Officer Gracious Chirambo this is done in compliance with Government Directives, laws and policies.

As an Office dedicated to upholding transparency and fighting maladministration, the office of the ombudsman is entrusted with setting a standard for public service integrity and accountability. Chirambo said overtime the Office of the Ombudsman accumulates volumes of data and documents which if not properly maintained, can lead to inefficiencies and errors.

“This exercise allows us to clean up outdated information, discard irrelevant documents, and correct any inaccuracies, ultimately helping maintain a streamlined and reliable record system,” he said.

Adding: “We have new members of staff, this also just helps us to be on the same page, while they are being oriented on the other hand.”

By conducting an annual file updating exercise, the Office of the ombudsman demonstrates its commitment to following government directives, laws, and policies thus leading by example as an oversight institution.

Section 3 of the amended Ombudsman Act (2023) stipulates that one of the functions of the Ombudsman is to provide advisory opinions or proposals on the improvement of public administration etal… hence the need to be exemplary in all of its operations.

This dedication helps reinforce the values we promote, showing that transparency and good governance start within.
