During the 11th IOI World Conference, IOI Secretary General, Günter Kräuter, participated in a Media Workshop in the course of which he presented the Austrian TV-show called “Bürgeranwalt” or “Advocate for the People”.
The weekly TV show has given the Austrian Ombudsman Board (AOB) an opportunity to present its work by showing real-life examples of complaints and finding solutions for the citizens concerned during the studio discussion. So far more than 400 shows have been broadcast on national prime-time television each Saturday. In his speech Ombudsman Kräuter highlighted the benefits: “This does not only increase awareness about our institution, it also has a preventive effect: We can draw attention to general human rights issues which exist in Austria, for example a lack of accessibility for people with disabilities.”
This successful format could serve as a role model for the promotion of the work of Ombudsmen around the world. Therefore a promotional video clip was shown at the conference to explain how the show works in more detail.
