An event dedicated to International Day of Migrants was co-organized by the Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights, State Migration Service, International Organization for Migration and EU on 19 December. The Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) attended the event.
In her speech the Commissioner said the essence of a year-long campaign on 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights under the motto ‘Stand up for Human Rights” is the equality of rights, non discrimination, participation and cooperation.
The Commissioner said that in 2016 UN launched a campaign “Together: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All” dedicated to International Day Migrants and our country joined these global campaigns.
It was noted the number of migrants coming to Azerbaijan is increasing and the Azerbaijani Ombudsman functioning already for 15 years protects not only the rights of citizens, but also foreigners, stateless persons and migrants also works on prevention of violation of their rights in cooperation with State Migration Service. It was added that members of Ombudsman’s National Preventive Group, regularly conduct monitoring in Centers State Migration Service for Illegal Migrants investigate the situation of persons living there and necessary actions are taken.
At the end of the event the International Organization for Migration rewarded the Commissioner with a Certificate of Appreciation for successful work in promotion and protection of human rights, improvement of legislation and application of international practice.
