Elmira Suleymanova, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) received Onno Kervers, Ambasador of the Kingdom of Netherlands to Azerbaijan. The Commissioner gave information about the establishment of the Ombudsman Office in Azerbaijan after the country became a member of CoE, its mandate, activity directions, the work carried out for protection, promotion and ensuring human rights of different groups of population, cooperation built with international organizations.
She also informed the guest about Twinning Project entitled “Support to Strengthening the Capacities of the Commissioner for Human Rights”, which lasted for 24 months and noted that the capacity of the Ombudsman institution and its NPM activities, the access to information and the protection of human rights which is in accordance with the requirements of international legislation, especially the requirements of Paris Principles was evaluated as a success by 45 experts from 6 EU countries involved to the project.
Ombudsman Suleymanova added that she pays close attention to the protection of women’s rights, ensuring gender equality, restoration of violated rights of women, and cooperates with international and regional organizations in this regard.
Ambassador Onno Kervers thanked the Commissioner for the comprehensive information about the activities of Ombudsman Office in Azerbaijan and appreciated her personal engagement in protection of human rights. Touching upon human rights in Netherlands, as well as joint projects implemented with international organizations, he also stressed the importance of cooperation between the Ombudsman Offices of Netherlands and Azerbaijan.
