Azerbaijan | Ombudsman visited the Pre-Trial Detention Facility

In the framework of the National Preventive Mechanism, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Sabina Aliyeva visited Baku Pre-Trial Detention Facility under auspieces of the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice.

Before the monitoring of the facility the Ombudsman met with the family members, relatives of the detinees in that facility and heard their complaints.

During the visit, a number of accused persons were received in private by the Ombudsman. Their complaints were about the detention condititons, nutrition, medical assistance, telephone communication as well as the treatment issues in the facility.

The Ombudsman informed the detainees about their rights during the visit which was accompanied by the members of the National Preventive Group. Some detainees were provided with legal consultation concerning the issues raised about the investigation of their cases. Some complaints were solved on the spot.

In the end of the visit the Ombudsman spoke with the administration of the facility and made recommendations on ensuring the rights of persons in places of detention.
