In March 2014, People’s Advocate Igli Totozani released his Special Report on factors affecting the increase of asylum applications by Albanian nationals in member states of the Schengen area.
The report addresses the problems encountered by member states of the Schengen area in relation to Albanian asylum-seekers. Therefore, it contains analyses of data as well as the main reasons and push factors provided by nationals of Albania who have been applying for asylum.
The report explores the situation of specific social as well as ethnic groups such as the Roma minority or the LGBT (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Trans-genders) community, since issues such as discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and/or sexual orientation and poverty often constitute main reasons for leaving the country. Phenomena such as blood feud and domestic violence play a central role in this regard as well.
Apart from analyses, the report also provides recommendations on measures in order to address the issues effectively and to improve the situation of those vulnerable social and ethnic groups.
