Finland | Petri Jääskeläinen continues as Ombudsman

Doctor of Laws Petri Jääskeläinen has been re-elected to serve as Parliamentary Ombudsman for a term of four years. His term will begin on 1 January 2018 and end on 31 December 2021. The election of Dr. Jääskeläinen was confirmed at the plenary session on 21 November 2017. Dr. Jääskeläinen was the only person who had submitted his candidature for the post.

Dr. Jääskeläinen has already acted as Parliamentary Ombudsman two four-year terms, during 2014–2017 and 2010–2013. Before his tenure as Ombudsman, he served two terms as Deputy-Ombudsman between 2002 and 2009.

Parliament elects the Ombudsman and Deputy-Ombudsmen for terms of four years at a time. Before the election, the Constitutional Law Committee assesses those who have submitted their candidatures. The Ombudsman is elected by secret ballot.
