Queen Margaret University (QMU) is offering a fully funded bursary to support an exceptional individual to conduct PhD research in the area of alternative dispute resolution.
The effective resolution of disputes between consumers and businesses and between citizens and the state is an area of increasing importance in the UK and internationally. Alternative Dispute Resolution and the informal justice system more generally have been subject to significant growth over the last few decades. Driven by demands for greater access to justice, simplicity, consumer empowerment and sustainability, more disputes are now being dealt with by complaint handlers, adjudicators, ombudsman schemes and mediators, rather than by the courts. This is an area both of significant development and of underlying controversy: what are the best ways of dealing with disputes and are current systems of justice delivering for consumers and citizens?
QMU invites applications to conduct PhD research in either of the two following areas:
Topic 1 - Consumer experiences of dispute resolution mechanisms [BUR14-01]
Topic 2 - Impact and effectiveness of dispute resolution mechanisms [BUR14-02]
Research must relate to one or more of the following dispute resolution mechanisms: mediation, ombudsman and Alternative Dispute Resolution schemes, tribunals and courts, or complaint handling.
