In a press conference, held on August 26th 2014, the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission (PDRC) announced the release of its first inspection report. In the course of the inspection that took place at the Dry Dock Detention Centre (DDDC), all commissioners of the PDRC conducted unmonitored interviews with detainees and inspected the detention centre's facilities.
The Bahrain Ombudsman's Standards for Visiting Prisons and Places of Detention served as a basis for the four-day long inspection. Observations, evidence gathering and interviews with detainees were the primary goals set out for the inspection.
Prior to the monitoring visit, all members of the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission participated in overseas trainings and observed actual inspections, in cooperation with Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons for England and Wales (HMIP).
The importance of this initial visit cannot be underestimated. At the press conference, the Chairman of the PDRC, Mr. Nawaf Al Moawda, stressed the significance of the inspection in the area of human rights protection in the Kindom of Bahrain.
