IRELAND | Promoting good governance in the public interest

On 27 March 2014, Ombudsman Peter Tyndall addressed the issue of promoting good governance in his speech at the Governance Forum. This year, the Office of the Ombudsman in Ireland is celebrating his 30th Anniversary. Over the past three decades, it has managed to establish itself as an integral part of the system of administrative justice, which comprises complaint handling by public bodies, public services ombudsmen as well as judicial review by the courts.

The Ombudsman provided a comprehensive insight into the work of his institution by describing the root causes of cases of maladministration, their respective handling and measures in order to improve services effectively. Complaints not only can lead to improvements of the system, but also provide a valuable opportunity to learn from mistakes. Therefore, the new ‘Ombudsman casebook’, issued quarterly later that year, will contain summaries of cases which have been investigated, examined or settled.

Also, the Ombudsman recognizes potential for improvement by extending the Ombudsman’s jurisdiction, especially with regard to public services provided by private entities.
