PAKISTAN/Karachi | Provincial Ombudsman Sindh orders Sugar Mills to take Remedial Measures for Controlling Pollution

Mr. Asad Ashraf  Malik, Provincial Ombudsman Sindh (Pakistan), received a complaint stating that the management of a sugar mill had been releasing contaminated water and toxic waste into the drain, which was hazardous to human health, livestock and marine life.

Mr. Asad Ashraf Malik, Provincial Ombudsman Sindh took serious notice of the matter and issued urgent directives to the authorities concerned, Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A), to initiate an immediate enquiry, which revealed that residents of the area were indeed exposed to serious health threats. As a consequence of the intervention of this institution the remedial measures recommended by the E.P.A. were implemented by the management of the sugar mill. A huge Treatment Plant was installed to control the water pollution and CO2 liquefaction to meet the requirements of E.P.A.

Subsequently, the sugar mill was also visited by the officials of the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A) from time to time, in order to ensure compliance of E.P.A. rules. These steps helped in checking pollution and environmental degradation. The Complainant expressed his satisfaction on the steps taken by the mill administration and thanked the Ombudsman for redressing their grievance and providing relief to the local community.
