Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela will be conferred with her fourth honorary Doctor of Laws Degree during the University of Cape Town’s law and commerce faculty graduation ceremony in Cape Town on 11 June 2015.
She will be honoured alongside Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke and struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada.
The university said it honoured Public Protector Madonsela for her courageous execution of her office’s duties as well as her achievement and maintenance of the values of accountability, responsiveness and openness which underlie South Africa’s Constitution.
She was awarded a similar degree by Rhodes University in April 2015. This followed two similar honours bestowed on her by Stellenbosch University in March 2015 and the University of Fort Hare in May 2013.
“I am deeply honoured by the award,” she said. “The greatest value in these awards is the recognition and affirmation of the Public Protector as an institution and inspiring interest in the institution, particularly among young lawyers, as an important avenue for justice in the area of administration law and as an essential pillar of our constitutional democracy.”
