Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela will on Tuesday, 07 October 2014, host her Swedish counterpart, Chief Parliamentary Ombudsman, Ms Elisabet Fura, during a roundtable discussion on the role of the Ombudsman in Pretoria.
Ms Fura, whose country was the first in the world to establish the ombudsman more than 200 years ago, will address the roundtable on the topic: “The Role of an Ombudsman in Ensuring Accountability in a Democracy – Lessons from Sweden.”
Public Protector Madonsela said the discussion would present an opportunity to deepen the understanding of the different roles that ombudsman institutions (Public Protector-like institutions) play in their countries based on those countries’ laws.
“This is an opportune time to engage on the lessons we can draw from our counterparts in established democracies as we celebrate 20 years of our constitutional democracy,” she said.
South Africa’s Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Hon. John Jeffreys, and the Ambassador of Sweden, H.E. Anders Hagelberg, will take part in the discussion.
