The World Bank, the Global Partnership for Social Accountability, the Nordic Trust Fund and the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) will hold a round table discussion in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, 25 March 2014 to raise awareness and promote a better understanding on the ombudsman’s role regarding the accountability of public service delivery as well as open government.
Ombudsman offices, as part of a broader accountability system, can promote citizen rights, while overseeing government agencies and service providers. This round-table will provide a glance at international experiences of different ombudsman offices, with the aim of illustrating different mechanisms and tools through which ombudsman offices can facilitate citizens’ voice and public accountability.
This roundtable will look at the experiences from the Ombudsman Office in Peru, the Ethiopian Ombudsman Institution and the Ombudsman Office in the Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan. The session will reflect on how collaboration between ombudsman offices and civil society can be fostered, while exploring possible areas of cooperation between these accountability institutions and the World Bank, in order to enhance open government and service delivery.
The round table will be chaired by Mr Jeff Thindwa (Manager, Social Accountability Practice, World Bank Institute) and panellists include Ms Diane Welborn (2nd Vice-President of the IOI), Ms Claudia Rosanna del Pozo Goicochea (Deputy Ombudsman of Peru), Mr Badshah Gul Wazir (Ombudsman of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan), Ms Fozia Amin (Chief Ombudsman of the Ethiopian Institution of the Ombudsman), Prof. Tom Pegram (Deputy Director of the Institute of Global Governance, University College London), Mr Renzo Lavin (Co-Director of the Civil Association for Equality and Justice, Argentina) and Ms Helene Grandvoinnet (Lead Social Development Specialist, World Bank). IOI Secretary General Günther Kräuter as well as former Ombudsman of Bermuda Ms Arlene Brock will also participate at this event.
The round table discussion will be held on 25 March 2014 from 12 - 2 pm local time and we cordially invite you to view the discussion by accessing the live webcast made available by the World Bank on Tuesday.
