IOI Secretary General Werner Amon followed an invitation from the Ombudsman of Colombia, Carlos Ernesto Camargo Assis, to participate in an international Ombudsman meeting on “Migration and Refuge – Rights at Risk”, which took place in Cartagena (Columbia) from 19 – 21 October 2021.
The international exchange put a specific focus on the problematic situation of migrants and refugees. Opening remarks were presented by Colombian Ombudsman Camargo Assis and the Ombudsman of Guatemala, Mr Augusto Jordan Rodas Andrade, who attended the meeting in his function as President of the Federation of Ibero-American Ombudsman (FIO).
In different plenary sessions and round table discussions, delegates exchanged information and experiences around topics such as human trafficking, labor exploitation, mixed migratory flows with a specific focus on vulnerable groups, as well as the effects of climate change and changing economies.
IOI Secretary General Werner Amon took the opportunity of this international event to present the IOI and its principles, visions and services. Furthermore, Mr Amon met Colombian President Iván Duque, and exchanged experiences with colleagues and representatives from countries effected by migration flows.
