AUSTRALIA | South Australian Ombudsman's 2023-24 Annual Report tabled in parliament

The South Australian Ombudsman’s 2023-24 Annual Report was tabled in parliament on Tuesday 15 October 2024.

The Ombudsman, Ms Emily Strickland, reported a five per cent increase in the number of complaints received – rising to just over 4600. More than 180 complaints were resolved by agreement including through the use of statutory conciliation powers.

“When I began my term at the start of 2024, I was keen to ensure services were accessible and timely without compromising our work in holding government agencies to account,” Ms Strickland said.

“The new Ombudsman SA Strategic Plan, which was finalised at the end of 2023-24, builds on our existing work, in ensuring fair outcomes for the public and that government acts with integrity and fairness, as well as a renewed focus on data driven decisions and internal continuous improvement.”

“Our focus on resolving complaints by agreement will enable us to broaden our reach and extends to the resolution of Freedom of Information external review applications.”

“Last financial year, we saw a seven per cent increase in external review requests, with 28 resolved by way of formal settlement or conciliation – an encouraging result.”

Ms Strickland also thanks outgoing Ombudsman Wayne Lines, whose term concluded at the end of 2023.
